UTMS Field Trips

Sweet Amalia Oyster Farm - Mrs. LaTorre's 8th-grade STEM students visited Sweet Amalia Oyster Farm located on the Delaware Bay to learn how oyster farming works, and how growing oysters is beneficial and necessary for a healthy ecosystem. Students also learned about restoration efforts and tried oysters for the first time.
NJ Aquaculture Innovation Center - Mrs. LaTorre's 8th-grade STEM students visited the Rutgers Aquaculture Innovation Center to learn about the hatchery, how growing and feeding oysters for commercial sale works, how living shorelines could protect our shore communities and participated in prototyping their own living shorelines in raceway tanks. They also created shell bags which will be used to restore the shoreline near the facility, grant pending, in the spring. Our students, if funded, will be participating in these activities, learning about environmental stewardship and conservation.
